In honor of Groundhog Day this week, I want to ask if you are also afraid to see your shadow just like Punxsutawney Phil?
And by this question I’m not necessarily referring to your physical shadow, but instead I’m talking about facing your mortality.
That’s because in my years of experience as a Fair Oaks estates attorney, I’ve found that the number one reason why people don’t do their estate plan—and hence run from their shadow, is because they can’t face their own death or the legal steps necessary to prepare for it!
Perhaps they feel overwhelmed at the thought of naming guardians to care for their minor kids if something happens. Maybe they just have no idea where to start in getting their finances in order and aren’t sure how to best protect the assets they’ve worked so hard for if incapacity occurs.
And so like the groundhog, they see the “shadow” of their own life and immediately run back to their place of hiding so they don’t have to deal with the situation any further.
But what I want to tell you today is that estate planning doesn’t have to be a scary process! Instead it can be easy, fun and extremely satisfying. There is no substitution for the peace of mind you’ll experience knowing that your family, assets and wishes will be protected no matter what life throws your way.
Not to mention, estate planning done right will save your loved ones from astronomical court costs, attorney’s fees and most importantly, it will allow them to mourn your loss without the burden of government red tape and financial confusion.
So, as we see all the news and excitement surrounding Punxsutawney Phil this year, take a long look at yourself and see if you are ready to make sure your family is taken care of no matter what. If your plans are sorely lacking, I invite you to give me, your neighborhood Fair Oaks estates attorney, a call at (916) 241-9661 to discuss your options.
